The Nova Scotia Food Security Network is a network of individuals and organizations that have expressed interest in working to build food security in Nova Scotia. We define food security as a situation that exists when "all people, at all time, have access to sufficient, nutritious, safe, personally acceptable and culturally appropriate foods that are produced, procured and distributed in ways that are environmentally sound, socially just and sustainable". The network strives to increase the proportion of Nova Scotians who have access to nutritious foods, and to increase the availability of safe, locally produced, nutritious foods and to support sustainable food systems in the province.

3. Deepening Roots Gardening Internship - Deepening Roots is a youth-led and youth-focused environmental internship held at Art of Living's North American Ashram in Quebec. **Check out Deepening Roots' new website . Program Description Now in its fourth year, Deepening Roots is a intensive multi-disciplinary summer internship that focuses on community-oriented sustainable agriculture together with leadership development, meditation and nutrition. Our goal is to cultivate a cadre of youthful leaders that will influence policy, implement practical solutions and inspire their generatiThe core curriculum consists of: 1) practical experience working in an existing 2-acre organic garden, 2) workshops in the latest techniques in organic agriculture and permaculture, 3) formal exposure to healthy nutrition and sustainable living. In addition, interns participate in unique leadership training that develops core competencies in communication, conflict resolution, managing stress and team building. This prepares interns to effectively face the myriad of challenges of applying the skills and concepts learned during the internship and of promoting sustainable change at a local level.
The four week training prepares interns to deliver to members of their home communities a comprehensive and practical two-day workshop in sustainable agriculture, community food systems and nutrition. This is a formal means for accomplishing Deepening Roots’ mandate of promoting the awareness and practice of sustainable agriculture, creating healthier eco-systems, creating local food security and allowing people to reconnect with nature in a healthy and productive manner.
“This summer has been the best summer of my life. Never before have I been engulfed in so much knowledge, had so much fun and grown so much. I came here not knowing much about the world of gardening and permaculture and feel so confident and inspired to go back to my community and share my knowledge. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.” -Jayne, Intern 2008
