With a focus on distributing local food, the Local Food Team of the citizen's group Spirit Nova Scotia has carried out a Produce Auction Feasibility Study. Representatives Nicole Burkhard and Dr. Ralph Martin will be visiting various communities throughout Nova Scotia this December, to talk about the results of the study. Farm producers and produce buyers are encouraged to attend. Either lunch or nutritional breaks will be provided.
Wholesale produce auctions, as seen in other communities, can provide an additional wholesale marketing outlet for small and medium growers and allows for a consolidated supply of produce for buyers. There are over 50 such auctions in the United States and one in Southern Ontario. For more information about produce auctions and the study, you can visit www.nsproduceauction.blogspot.com .
Meeting locations, dates and times are: Kentville: Wednesday, December 3rd from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Cornwallis Room of the Kentville Research Station (32 Main St.). Lunch will be provided by the Kings County Federation of Agriculture. Truro: Tuesday, December 9th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Alumni Hall (Cumming Hall) of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (62 Cumming Dr.). Sydney: Wednesday, December 10th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market building (340 Keltic Dr.). Everyone is welcome. If you plan on attending, please RSVP by e-mail at
