In order to meet the rapidly rising consumer demand for food produced in Nova Scotia, this cooperative of Farmer’s Markets, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Agrapoint, has contracted with Service Canada (HRSDC) to carry out a year-long Labour Market Development Study.

The Labour Market Development Program (LMD) Phase 1 Report provides a summary of the findings from the information obtained at those meetings, describes the indicators that emerged, leading to Phase 2 of the LMD, action research into the identified Areas of Greatest Opportunity

Study examines why farmers' markets succeed and fail Print E-mail

Even during periods of rapid expansion and popularity spurred on by self-named "foodies," and the local food movement, a startling number of farmers' markets close within, or after, their first year of operation according to a new study from Oregon State University. In a seven-year study of the performance of Oregon farmers' markets, 62 markets opened and 32 closed for a net statewide gain of 30 markets, said Larry Lev, a marketing economist in OSU's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Antigonish community supports Braemore Co-op Food Market Print E-mail

The Braemore Co-op Food Market, supported by other Antigonish area groups who have an interest in building a customer base for local and authentic food, is hosting a wine and cheese event at their store on Tuesday 19 June, 6:30 - 9pm.

The reception is part of an on-going collaborative public awareness campaign to mobilize community members who want to support local agricultural producers. Everyone is invited to attend this community celebration of local agriculture.

Stats Can 2006 Census of Agriculture Print E-mail

This year, Statistics Canada published three reports from its 2006 Census of Agriculture, that includes a breakdown by province.

Comprehensive information about agricultural operations across Canada and the people managing those farms is available in these reports. Snapshot of Canadian Agriculture looks at the products and people of Canadian farming. The Financial Picture of Farms in Canada reviews agriculture's performance from the perspective of small and large farms. Farming in Canada's CMAs profiles the farms that share space with urban areas in Canada.

Following is an article on these reports by Wayne Roberts, Project Coordinator for the Toronto Food Policy Council. He suggests "the days of food as usual are numbered". This article was written for the 24 May edition of Toronto's on-line Now Magazine

Factors Affecting the Nutritional Value of Food Print E-mail

Following is a review by Andy Pedersen of research done in 2006 for Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia as a community project by a team of Mount St. Vincent University fourth-year students in Applied Human Nutrition. The students--Corinne Porter, Jason George and Alyson Werger--took on our cooperative's request for help with research into the nutritional benefit of fresh local food as part of their course work. The purpose of our request was to generate resource and support materials for our 2006 Marketing and Development Program. You can download the full text of their report here.
